I found I had two thoughts running through my mind when I read about this competition - one of morbid curiosity which compelled me to look and laugh, but then one I didn't expect - one which made me feel warm. For once the world is celebrating something other than the best looking or prettiest examples of something, and even further many of these animals are from broken-backgrounds, many rescued animals who may have been very poorly treated.

The World's ugliest dog fair has been running for almost 20 years now and is steadily growing each year. The winner this year, a three-legged, one-eyed Chinese Crested Dog (by far the most popular breed of the show) called Gus, gets $1600 worth of prize money, all of which is to go to the treatment of Gus' cancer. He lost his eye to a Tomcat in a fight and his leg to the cancer. Many of the recent winners are ill-treated pets that go on to get the kind of serious special attention that only animal lovers can give, with many owners indicating that due to their rescue from whatever bad experiences, the animals become as loving as any pet you could have. For me - a much better idea than 'beauty pageants or Crufts'!
